Medicare enrollment
EP stands for Initial Enrollment Period. This is the time when you are soon to be 65 years old or first enroll in Part A and/or Part B of Medicare. You can join a plan when you first become eligible for Medicare. This is anytime beginning three months before the month you turn 65 and ends three months after the month you turned 65.For example, if you turn 65 on July 12th, your eligibility period starts on April 1st and ends on October 31st.
Unless you have other creditable coverage from an employer based plan or retirement plan, most of us enroll in Part B of Medicare at or around the age of 65. If you don't enroll when you're first eligible, you may have to pay a Part B late enrollment penalty, and you have a gap in coverage if you decide you want Part B later.
If you are disabled and have Social Security Disability Insurance, you can join an advantage plan three months before to three months after month 25 of your disability.
If you are NOT receiving Social Security Payments, you can enroll in Medicare Part A and/or Part B in the following ways:
1. Online at www.SocialSecurity.gov.
2. By calling Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY users 1-800-325-0778)
3. In person at your local Social Security office.
